About CompX2

CompX2 or (Comp Comp, which stands for Computer Competition) is a coding competition hosted at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley. Teams of 3 or less people can compete in two divisions (novice or advanced) to solve unique computer programming problems and puzzles. The Competition is divided into two parts. The first part of the contest will be coding based. This section will be tested with Java, C++, and other programming languages. The second section is puzzle based. This will not involve any coding, and competitor will be solving select puzzles that will involve both skill and keenness.

Program Logistics

CompX2 2018 was held on March 17, 2018 from 8AM-4PM. The following is information for CompX2 2018 (CompX2 2019 information is yet to be announced. Please signup to get notified for CompX2 2019) Please make sure you arrive during the registration window (8AM-8:30AM) so that we can get everyone seated in time. This competition will have a small registration fee, and we will provide lunch. We are working on our agenda, which will be posted below when ready:

What to Bring

The following items are required:

  1. One (1) computer, laptop, tablet, or other computing device that is capable of accessing the internet. During the contest, each team is only allowed to use one computer, however, feel free to bring backup computers.
  2. Writing Utensils such as, but not limited to, pencils, pens, erasers, and markers. You can use these items to brainstorm ideas and to write pseudocode. It will come in handy when you work out the puzzle problems.

The following items are recommended:

  1. Charging Cable. We will offer some power cords for you to charge your laptops in.
  2. Small Mascots.

The following items are prohibited for use during contest:

  1. Peripherals. Any peripherals, including mice and keyboards, are not allowed during this contest.
  2. External Monitors. No external monitors will be allowed during this contest. The computing device must be able to run by itself without an external monitor.
  3. Personal Hotspot Devices. Devices such as, but not limited to, myfi, hotspot sharer, or phones that can broadcast a hotspot signal are not allowed during the contest.

CompX2 2018 will be featuring a variety prizes, featuring items such as hard drives, keyboards, rubber ducks, and even fidget spinners. We will give out more than 20 prizes!

FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

What can I bring into the event?
Teams are only allowed to use one (1) laptop during the competition. Please bring your own writing material (ex: pencils, pens, erasers, etc.). We will be providing you with both competition packets and scratch paper. No external peripherals (keyboards, mouse, monitors) will be allowed. However, you are allowed to bring along your mascot! I’m not particularly skilled at computer science, can I really win?
Yes! We have a novice division created specifically for those who haven’t done programming seriously for more than 2 years. Along with that, we have a special round which focuses less on programming skills and more on general computer science and problem solving skills.
